Greens pills are supplements that provide nutrients from vegetables in an easy-to-consume form. Many people use greens powder supplements, but the simple truth is that greens capsules are much easier to consume, cheaper, and can actually be just as powerful! In this article, I will use my expertise as a Certified Nutrition Coach to explain what greens pills are, their benefits, downsides, and overviews of the top 3 best greens pills. Let’s dive in!

Key Takeaways

  • Greens pills provide a convenient way to boost nutrient intake, especially for those with busy lifestyles because essentially what they are is vegetables and greens in a pill…that effectively eliminates the need to fit fruits and veggies in your diet every day.
  • The effectiveness and quality of greens pills can vary due to a lack of standardized formulations; therefore, consumers should choose products backed by third-party testing and research.
  • As a Certified Nutrition Coach, I have personally tested and evaluated all 3 of these supplements, and my #1 ranked greens pill supplement is Vitalea by a mile. I personally take Vitalea every day and strongly recommend it to my clients.

Introduction: What Are Greens Pills?

Greens pills are dietary supplements designed to help meet daily vegetable intake by providing a concentrated source of nutrients from various greens, vegetables, and other plant ingredients. They can also help fill nutritional gaps, providing a low-calorie option rich in vitamins and minerals.

Top 3 Best Greens Pills On The Market

With so many greens pill supplements on the market, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. I have personally tested and reviewed the top five greens pill supplements available today to help you navigate your options. To be clear, I want to say this right off the bat: My top ranked greens pill supplement is BY FAR the best option on this list. The rest of the options on this list are decent supplements, but none of them come even close to the top ranked one…I’ll explain why in the next section.

Now, are the rest of the greens pills on the list solid enough products to be worth investing in? Sure. Do they all provide decent dosages of fruits and vegetables in the convenient form of capsules? Yes. BUT, every other option below the #1 on this list just contains standard, cheap greens such as grocery store fruits and vegetables…they do NOT contain actual superfoods.

If you’re confused about the difference between just standard “greens” and genuine “superfoods,” allow me to explain in the majorly significant difference in the below section…

#1: Vitalea by Kylea Health

Joe Costello holding Vitalea greens pills

Vitalea stands out above the rest of the options on the market for a long list of reasons. In terms of potency, efficacy, and ingredient quality, nothing comes even close to Vitalea, and I’ll tell you exactly why. Most greens pills contain simple fruits and vegetables that most people obtain from their regular diets anyways. In other words – they are a waste of money because people can already buy these ingredients at the grocery store…but that’s not the case with Vitalea.

Vitalea contains 15 ACTUAL SUPERFOODS! Let’s be clear about what the term “superfood” means. Things you will see at your grocery store are NOT superfoods. Items like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, and many other just run-of-the-mill vegetables are NOT superfoods. Superfoods are ingredients that are a notch ABOVE regular foods, which is why the term “superfood” exists.

Genuine superfoods are rare. They can only be found in certain parts of the ocean or local farms that specialize in growing superfoods specifically. The 5 most rare, potent, and nutritious superfoods are unquestionably Chlorella, Spirulina, Barley Grass, Alfalfa Grass, and Wheat Grass…all of them naturally contain incredibly high amounts of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and so much more. So, what does this have to do with Vitalea?

Vitalea contains ALL 5 of the aforementioned most powerful superfoods in existence, and more importantly, Vitalea does NOT use a proprietary blend, which means it discloses the individual dosage amounts for each ingredient…that means they have BOTH the highest QUALITY and the highest QUANTITY of the earth’s most powerful superfoods.

If that’s not enough to convince you these are the best greens pills on the market, Vitalea also contains 10 other extremely high quality superfoods, and they do NOT use a proprietary blend for any of those additional ingredients either.

BOTTOM LINE: So, the bottom line here for me is they have the highest quality superfoods, the highest quantities of those superfoods, and their formula is 100% transparent with the dosages. Plus, at this point you are probably thinking Vitalea is super expensive, but it’s actually incredibly affordable at only $49 for a 30 serving jar. So for me as a Certified Nutritionist, this is everything I want to see in a greens pill supplement, and the fact that it’s affordable is just the cherry on top.

#2: Texas Superfood

Joe Costello holding Texas Superfood greens pills

Texas Superfood features a comprehensive formula with plenty of quality ingredients, including many nutritious fruits and vegetables, making it a pretty robust dietary supplement. This product is designed to support overall health, improve immunity, and boost energy levels. BUT, here’s the problem…

With their marketing tactics, Texas Superfood tries to impress people by showing their long list of fruits and vegetables. However, I know something that the average consumer doesn’t because I learned how to read Supplement Facts Panels during my training to become a Certified Nutrition Coach. Here’s the secret MAJOR problem with this supplement…

Yes, it has a long list of ingredients, BUT all of these ingredients are contained inside of a very small proprietary blend. What does that mean? It means that all of the ingredients are in the supplement, but they are only provided in very small quantities. Using a proprietary blend allows manufacturers to hide the specific dosages of each ingredient, so most people just see a long list of ingredients and assume Texas Superfood must be a high quality supplement…not so fast.

If the quantities of the ingredients are too low, then you can’t reap the benefits of those ingredients. For example, would you rather have one singular piece of broccoli, or a whole serving of broccoli? Obviously, you’d get more benefits from consuming a full serving. Well, in this case, you’re just not getting that high of a quantity. Also, in terms of ingredient quality, these are just regular run-of-the-mill vegetables…they are NOT genuine superfoods like I spoke about before with Vitalea.

BOTTOM LINE: Texas Superfood is a decent product that contains a long list of fruits and vegetables, but they use a propietary blend, which means we have no idea whether or not those vegetables are provided in high enough dosages. There’s just no transparency there. On top of that, they do not use what I would consider to be genuine superfoods. Vitalea contains ALL of the most nutritious superfoods AND transparently doses them very generously…Texas Superfood simply does not.

#3: Balance of Nature

Joe Costello holding Balance of Nature Fruits and Veggies greens pills

Balance of Nature is a very similar product to Texas Superfood, but it contains less total ingredients, which is ultimately what puts it into the #3 spot. It is definitely the worst option on this list, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad supplement. Let’s talk about some of the things Balance of Nature did right and some of the major things they did wrong…

Balance of Nature is separated into two different bottles. One of them contains strictly fruits, and the other one contains strictly veggies. So, at the very least, you know you’re getting both fruits and vegetables with Balance of Nature. However, I’m about to sound a lot like I just did in my breakdown of Texas Superfood because a lot of the same issues are present with this supplement…

The biggest issue is again the use of proprietary blends. The list of ingredients appears to be impressive at first, but since they use proprietary blends, we don’t know if the ingredients are dosed highly enough. Plus, the total potency of the blends is pretty low…so we can be pretty confident that most of the ingredients are under dosed.

The second biggest issue with Balance of Nature is another one it shares with Texas Superfood…it just contains standard run-of-the-mill fruits and vegetables. It does NOT contain ingredients I would consider to be genuine superfoods such as Chlorella, Spirulina, or Alfalfa Grass…Vitalea, on the other hand, contains all of those ingredients. And again, Vitalea DOES disclose the dosages, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

BOTTOM LINE: As I said before, neither Balance of Nature nor Texas Superfood has what it takes to compete with Vitalea. I’m not saying Balance of Nature is completely useless, though. Balance of Nature provides a decent amount of various fruits and vegetables, but we can’t see the dosages, so we don’t know if the dosages are high enough. Plus, Balance of Nature uses very basic ingredients that are not what I believe to be genuine superfoods. This is yet another greens pill supplement that is just average and simply can not compete with the #1 ranked Vitalea.

Why Do People Use Greens Pills?

Many people turn to greens supplements for their convenience and nutritional benefits. For busy individuals, powdered greens simplify getting necessary nutrients without preparing fresh vegetables daily. This convenience is particularly appealing for individuals who travel frequently or have demanding schedules.

Greens supplements are designed to help individuals meet their daily vitamin and mineral intake, providing a low-calorie option rich in essential nutrients. They support overall health, boost immunity, and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Greens pills offer a practical solution for those who struggle to consume enough fruits and vegetables, filling nutritional gaps.

Adding greens supplements to your diet enhances vitamin and mineral consumption, improves digestion, and supports your immune system. Greens pills can be a valuable addition to your wellness routine, whether you’re looking to improve overall health or need a convenient nutrient boost.

Greens Powder vs. Greens Pills: Understanding the Key Differences

As a Certified Nutrition Coach, I often get asked by clients about the difference between greens powder supplements and greens pills. Both types of supplements are designed to provide a concentrated source of nutrients from vegetables, fruits, and other plant-based ingredients, but they vary in their form, ease of use, and potential benefits. Let’s break down the key differences between these two options:

Form and Ease of Use

Greens Powder: As the name suggests, greens powder supplements come in a powdered form, usually packaged in containers or single-serving packets. To take it, you typically mix a scoop of the powder with water, juice, or smoothies.

  • Pros: The powder form is versatile and can be easily added to various liquids, making it a great option for those who enjoy smoothies or shakes. Many people find that they can blend the powder with other ingredients to mask any strong flavors that some greens powders might have.
  • Cons: It requires a little more effort and preparation than pills. Some people may not enjoy the taste, especially if it has a strong, earthy flavor. Plus, you’ll need to carry the container or packets with you if you want to take it on-the-go.

Greens Pills: Greens pills or greens capsules are simply the powdered greens packed into convenient pill form. This makes them quick and easy to take—just swallow with water.

  • Pros: Pills are incredibly convenient and portable. There’s no mixing required, and you can take them with you anywhere. If you’re on-the-go or traveling, pills can be an easy way to keep up with your greens supplement routine.
  • Cons: If you need to take a high number of pills to get the full serving (which can happen with some brands), it may not be as pleasant as taking a single scoop of powder. Additionally, swallowing pills isn’t ideal for everyone, especially those who struggle with larger capsules.

Nutrient Absorption and Bioavailability

Greens Powder: Since greens powders are often designed to be mixed with liquid, they can be absorbed more quickly by the body compared to pills. The digestive system doesn’t need to break down a capsule or tablet, so the nutrients may be more readily available. Some greens powders may contain added ingredients like digestive enzymes or probiotics to further support digestion and absorption, which could improve bioavailability.

Greens Pills: While the nutrient content of pills is generally similar to that of powders, pills must first be broken down in the digestive system, which can take a little longer. This might mean that the nutrients are released more slowly, but this doesn’t necessarily mean less absorption—it just depends on the individual and the quality of the product.

Ingredient Quality and Concentration

Greens Powder: Greens powders often contain a broader range of ingredients since there’s more space in a powder formulation. You might find additional ingredients like spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, barley grass, or even superfoods like ashwagandha, turmeric, or adaptogens.

  • Diversity: Because they are not limited to the size of a pill, powders are more likely to contain a variety of plant-based nutrients, offering a wider spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Concentration: Some powders may be more concentrated in terms of nutrient density, but this isn’t always the case. Always check the label to ensure you’re getting an adequate amount of the key ingredients.

Greens Pills: While some greens pills can contain a good variety of ingredients, the number of ingredients is often more limited compared to powders because of space constraints. The quality of ingredients can vary, and you might not get the same diversity in terms of superfoods or additional health-supporting compounds.

  • Concentration: Because pills are more compact, the concentration of greens may not be as high per serving as in a powder form. You may need to take multiple pills to match the serving size of a powder.

Taste and Texture

Greens Powder: The taste of greens powders can be hit or miss. Many powders have a strong, earthy, or grassy flavor, which some people might find unpleasant. This is particularly true for formulations that contain ingredients like spirulina or chlorella. However, if you’re mixing it into smoothies or shakes, the flavor can usually be masked by fruits, sweeteners, or other ingredients. You have more control over taste. By blending it with fruits, vegetables, or other flavorings, you can make the supplement more enjoyable.

Greens Pills: Pills are tasteless and odorless, making them a great option for people who can’t stand the taste of greens powders. If you’re sensitive to taste or texture, pills are a good option to consider.

Dosage and Serving Size

Greens Powder: Typically, you’ll take one scoop per day, which is about 5-10 grams depending on the product. Some powders may have more concentrated formulas that pack more nutrients into a smaller serving, so it’s important to follow the recommended serving size.

Greens Pills: Pills usually come in bottles with serving sizes that range from 2 to 6 pills per day, depending on the brand and the concentration of the ingredients. Some people find it difficult to swallow multiple pills at once, especially if the dosage requires several pills.

Price and Cost-Effectiveness

Greens Powder: The price of greens powders can vary, but generally, powders offer a more cost-effective option for those looking to get a variety of nutrients in one supplement. They usually provide a larger quantity of servings for the price, making them a better value in terms of cost per serving.

Greens Pills: Greens pills tend to be more expensive on a per-serving basis. Because they often contain fewer ingredients in concentrated form, you may end up needing more pills to achieve the same nutrient intake as a powder.

Conclusion: Which One is Right for You?

Ultimately, the choice between greens powder and greens pills depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, and goals.

If you want convenience, portability, and a quick, no-fuss way to get your greens, greens pills may be the better option for you. My personal choice in terms of the best greens pills on the market is without a doubt VITALEA. It’s not even close to be honest…you get 4,000 MG of greens powder, PLUS an additional 1,000 MG of beet root powder. Love to see it!

If you’re looking for a wider variety of nutrients, don’t mind a bit of prep time, and are open to experimenting with different flavors in smoothies or shakes, greens powders might be a better fit. In my personal opinion, the best greens powder is called Total Living Drink Greens.

Total Living Drink is the best greens powder for a lot of reasons, but the main reason is it is the only greens powder on the market that provides over 15 grams worth of greens. Most greens powders contain about 5,000-10,000, but the Total Living Drink Greens powder contains 15,000! That’s just crazy. Plus, to make it an even stronger contender for the best greens powder on the market, it also contains probiotics and digestive enzymes to help improve gut health.

Keep in mind…gut health is very important, but you don’t necessarily need ingredients like probiotics and digestive enzymes to improve your gut health. Are they nice to have? Yes. But are they a necessity? No. Here’s why…many greens powder and greens pill supplements do not contain probiotics, and yet, users still report improved gut health and digestive health. Why is that? It’s because the greens powder itself (depending on the formula) should contain enough nutrients that are specifically beneficial for gut health.

In other words, many greens powder products use specific ingredients in their greens blend that are known to improve gut health, such as wheat grass, barley grass, and oat grass. You will often find these ingredients included in the greens blend formula of many different greens powders.

My point is it definitely doesn’t hurt to add probiotics into the formula, but you still are very likely to get gut health benefits even without them because the greens powder itself is so nutritious…that is, provided you choose the right greens powder! Again, if you are going to go with a powder over a pill, my official recommendation for the best greens powder is Total Living Drink Greens.

In my opinion (based on my very extensive experience with greens powders), the main thing to keep in mind with greens powders is that they are all going to taste bad and all of them are a lot of work. Total Living Drink is really the best tasting greens powder, but I’d be lying if I said it tasted “good.” Drinking greens powders is simply not an enjoyable experience. With greens pills, you don’t have that problem.

Greens powders require mixing or blending, and then the worst part is simple…you have to drink it! For those of you who don’t know, green powder tastes very bad…there’s just no way around the awful taste of consuming greens powders EXCEPT for switching to greens pills, which is why that’s what I personally did. The greens pills I take myself every day are called VITALEA.

Both forms can be beneficial for overall health, especially for filling nutrient gaps and boosting your intake of plant-based foods. However, as with any supplement, it’s important to consider them as part of a well-balanced diet, and to choose a high-quality product from a trusted brand to ensure maximum benefits.

For example, if you’re going with a powder supplement, one thing you want to look for is that it is an organic greens powder supplement. Organic greens powder supplements are definitively superior to those that are not organic.

Key Ingredients in Greens Pills

An array of key ingredients used in greens pills, including spirulina and chlorella.

A primary ingredient in many greens pills is organic spirulina, a nutrient-dense superfood packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Spirulina is known for its ability to support overall health and enhance immune function. Another common ingredient is green tea extract, which is valued for its detoxifying properties and rich nutrient profile.

Other notable ingredients that a quality greens blend will often contain include Chlorella, which is abundantly rich in a wide variety of essential vitamins, contributing to its antioxidant properties. Organic barley grass, organic wheatgrass, and organic alfalfa powder are also often included for their high concentrations of chlorophyll and other nutrients that support digestion and overall health.

These ingredients work together to provide a comprehensive nutritional boost. In my opinion, all greens powders should contain all of the aforementioned grasses…especially organic barley grass.

For example, Vitalea contains a blend of 15 superfoods, fruits, vegetables, and greens, providing a good source of fiber and an excellent source of vitamin K. Vitalea includes a wide variety of farm fresh sourced superfoods and nutrient dense natural herbs to support overall health and digestive function. Knowing the key ingredients in greens pills helps you choose a product that aligns with your health goals.

Potential Downsides of Greens Pills

A person contemplating the potential downsides of greens pills, surrounded by various supplements.

While greens supplements offer numerous benefits, they are not without potential downsides. One major issue is the lack of standardized formulations, which can lead to inconsistent quality and effectiveness. Additionally, greens pills can be relatively expensive, and the high cost may not always guarantee superior quality.

Taste is another significant factor; some users may find the flavor of greens supplements off-putting, leading to discontinuation of use. It’s essential to check user reviews and choose products with favorable taste profiles to ensure continued use.

Greens pills should not replace a balanced diet; they are best used to complement healthy eating habits. Over-relying on greens supplements can lead to neglecting other essential food groups, resulting in an imbalanced diet. View these supplements as an addition to, rather than a replacement for, whole fruits and vegetables.

How to Choose the Right Greens Pills

Several considerations are involved in choosing the right greens pills. First, look for products that have undergone third-party testing to verify their purity and ingredient accuracy. This ensures that you are consuming a safe and effective supplement. Some people also insist on a choosing a supplement that utilizes strictly certified organic greens and organic fruit, which is a good idea. Almost all greens powders use certified organic greens and/or organic fruit, but it’s still a good idea to check before you buy.

Be cautious of overly promising health claims; research whether the ingredients are present in effective doses. Thoroughly reviewing the ingredient list ensures the product aligns with your dietary needs and safety preferences.

Lastly, consider the cost per serving when selecting greens pills, as prices can vary widely. Balance cost with quality and effectiveness to make a reasonable choice that fits your budget.

Are Greens Pills Safe?

On average, greens supplements are generally safe for consumption. However, there are potential risks to be aware of. Some greens powders may contain harmful substances like heavy metals, which can accumulate in the body and pose health risks over time. Certain greens supplements can interfere with medications, such as blood thinners, due to their high vitamin K content.

It’s also important to note that some greens powders may not be suitable for children, nursing mothers, or pregnant individuals. Consult a healthcare provider before incorporating greens powders into your diet to ensure safety and proper usage. This can help you avoid potential risks and determine the best approach for your health needs.

Common Misconceptions About Greens Pills

There are several common misconceptions about greens pills that need to be addressed. One major misconception is that greens powders can replace whole fruits and vegetables in your diet. While they can supplement your nutrient intake, they should not be viewed as a substitute for fresh produce.

Another misconception is that greens supplements lack scientific backing. In reality, many of the ingredients found in greens powders are backed by scientific research, demonstrating their potential health benefits.

Remember that relying heavily on greens supplements can lead to neglecting other essential food groups, which are vital for a balanced diet. Greens pills should be used to complement a healthy diet, not replace it.

Summary

In summary, greens pills offer a convenient and effective way to boost your nutrient intake and support overall health. By understanding the key ingredients, benefits, and potential downsides, you can make an informed decision about which greens supplements are right for you.

Remember, while greens pills can enhance your diet, they should not replace whole foods. Choose products wisely, consult with healthcare professionals, and enjoy the benefits of a balanced approach to nutrition.
